The Network of Reproductive Health Journalists of Nigeria (NRHJN) has officially honoured Dr. (Mrs.) Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the First Lady of Lagos State, with the award of “Lagos Reproductive Health Champion.”
Led by National President ‘Yinka Shokunbi alongside a delegation of executive media members, the organisation presented the plaque of honour in her office.
The award acknowledges her dedication to advancing maternal and child health, expanding safe medical spaces, and advocating for the rights of women and girls across Lagos State, while encouraging her to build a lasting legacy in public health.
Accepting the award, Dr. Sanwo-Olu commended the media network for utilizing evidence-based journalism to highlight critical sexual and reproductive health challenges.
Established 16 years ago, NRHJN spans 16 states and collaborates with global and local partners to drive policy change, campaign against gender-based violence, and broaden access to healthcare services such as family planning, menstrual health, and HPV vaccinations.
The First Lady praised the journalists for using their platforms to disseminate responsible health education to the public.
Our Correspondent reports that, Dr. Sanwo-Olu brings substantial clinical and administrative expertise to her position, serving as the first medical doctor to become First Lady of Lagos State. With a 25-year tenure in the Lagos State public health service—culminating in her leadership as Chief Medical Director of General Hospital, Somolu—she holds advanced degrees in medicine, public health, and business administration.
NRHJN emphasized that bestowing this honour on a seasoned public health physician aims to trigger stronger government investment and dismantle barriers to essential care for women and children.
