As part of efforts geared towards addressing climate change challenges, Nigerian Youths have converged in Bauchi, the State Capital for the 3rd Edition of Local Conference of Youth (LCOY) Nigeria.
In a welcome address shortly before the commencement of the Conference on Saturday 31st August, 2024, at the conference centre of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) Bauchi, the lead facilitator of the Conference Mrs. Habiba Ajufoh said that the objective of LCOY Nigeria 2024 is to build bridges and proffer solutions to climate change challenges.

Ajufoh , who also double as the Executive Director of of an NGO, Community Advocates for Rural Development (CARD) who were the organisers of the LCOY 3rd edition, said that real-climate change is not just about rising temperatures or melting ice caps; but also about the very air we breathe, the food we eat, and the world will be bequeathed to the next generation.
Ajufoh said the main focus of the LCOY would centered around innovative approach, through interaction with experts ained at triggering action that could offer solutions to climate.

“Today, you are not just attendees; you’are change-makers, innovators, and leaders in the making. Whether you are passionate about sustainable agriculture, tech-driven solutions, renewable energy, or just keeping our planet clean, there’s a place for you here. This conference is your stage to shine, to share ideas, and to collaborate with others who are just as fired up as you are”.
“We got an amazing lineup of speakers and panelists who are here to inspire, challenge, and equip you with the tools to make a real difference. But this event isn’t just about listening-it’s about engaging, questioning, and sharing your own ideas. Don’t be shy; your voice matters, and together, we can create a ripple effect that goes beyond Bauchi, beyond Nigeria, and touches the entire world”, Ajufoh enthused.
In a goodwill message, Bauchi State commissioner of works and environment Rt. Hon. Danlami Ahmed Kawule described the conference as a historic moment being the first of its kind in Northern Nigeria.

The Commissioner that it was momentous occasion, one that will be remembered as a turning point in our collective efforts to address the pressing issue of climate change.
Hon. Kawule said that the theme of this conference, ‘Building Bridges for Climate Action,’ was relevant, stressing that, in a world where climate change presents challenges that cross borders and generations, it is essential that we build strong bridges between communities, between the public and private sectors, and, most importantly, between generations.
“The youth gathered here today are not just the future leaders; you are the current driving force behind the climate action movement. Your voices, your ideas, and your energy are crucial in shaping a sustainable future for all.
“I want to take a moment to extend my deepest appreciation to the organizers of this groundbreaking event, the Community Advocate for Rural Development (CARD). Your tireless commitment, vision, and dedication have made this conference a reality. Bringing together such a diverse group of young leaders and environmental advocates from across the nation is no small feat, and your efforts have created a powerful platform for collaboration, learning, and action”, said the Commissioner.

Our correspondent reports that the Conference featured paper presentations from environmental science experts drawn from the academia. There were also penal of discussants that offered opportunities for the youth to contribute and ask questions on climate change.
