The importance of grassroots involvement in the electoral process has been described as a crucial step towards strengthening democracy and ensuring effective leadership in Nigeria.
A former gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Mr Segun Showunmi, stated this during a North East town hall meeting held in Bauchi.
The event, themed “The Alternative,” aimed to raise awareness among women and youth about the significance of active participation in elections.
Speaking at the event, Mr Showunmi highlighted the concerning disparity between the number of registered voters and the actual votes cast in previous elections.
He described the trend as troubling and called on citizens to break free from complacency, encouraging them to elect leaders with the competence and vision to drive the country forward.
Mr Showunmi urged citizens to embrace their civic responsibility, stating that the power to shape the nation’s future lies in their hands.
He emphasised that informed and active participation in elections is essential to ensuring progress and good governance.
During his visit to Bauchi, Mr Showunmi also toured ongoing and completed projects undertaken by Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration.
He expressed satisfaction with the developmental strides in the state, noting that the administration was on the right path to delivering meaningful change.
At the event, women leaders also addressed the gathering discouraging them from selling their votes on election day.
