ASHH Foundation, WFWI Takes Anti GBV Awareness Campaign to Motor Park in Bauchi

Attah Sisters Helping Hand (ASHH) Foundation, a Bauchi Based CSO and it’s Change Agents have conducted awareness campaign on the scourge of Gender Based Violence (GBV) at the ever-busy Tirwun Motor Park in Bauchi.

Sule Joseph the Communication officer for Women for Women International (CSSF) phase 2 project, said that the aim of the campaign was to recreate more awareness on the severe repercussions of neglect, rape, domestic violence, and forced marriage against women and girls in the society.

While pointing out some of the adverse effects of GBV, Mr. Joseph  said that rape is not just an act of violence, but also  a theft of one’s dignity and a breach of the fundamental right to autonomy.

He also advised that, whenever rape occurred, the survivor should not be cleanup, rather the incident should be reported to police and taken to government hospital.

The communication officer further reiterated that, “domestic violence is not a private matters; it is an insidious force that tears apart the very fabric of our homes, leaving scars that linger for generations”.

He also said that the collaboration between ASHH Foundation and Change Agents of Tirwun community underscores a commitment to raising awareness and creating a united force against Gender-Based Violence.

“As communities unite during the 16 Days of Activism, initiatives like these play a pivotal role in fostering a safer and more inclusive society for women and girls”, said Joseph.

Speaking at the event,  the  chairman of Tirwun Motor park, Mallam Bashir Mohammed  said, the significance of a motor park as a convergence point for people from diverse background cannot be over emphasized.

He said that the choice of public places for such campaigns highlights the crucial role that such spaces play in our society, serving as avenue through which  individuals from different parts of the state intersect.

The Chairman then applauded the management of ASHH Foundation for it’s foresight in incorporating SGBV prevention initiative into the discourse within the motor park setting.

“Acknowledging the diverse array of individuals who come together on these spaces further buttressed the importance of addressing SGBV comprehensively, considering the unique dynamics presents in such community hubs”, Mallam Mohammed said.

Aisha Aminu Idris, a member of the  change agents also said that man’s responsibility is to provide for his household, and also  ensures the physical well-being of his family.

Aisha Aminu also emphasize that when a man neglects his duty to provide for his family and allows the women to bear the financial burden alone, it creates an imbalance that can lead to a lack of respect within the family structure.

“Respect is a two-way street, and by shouldering your responsibility, you strengthen the foundation upon which your family stands”, said Aisha.

Our correspondent reports that the awareness campaign was  funded by the Women for Women International as part of activity marking the 2023 16 Days of Activism to end Gender Based Violence across the globe
