The Bauchi State Government has commenced a comprehensive overhaul of its Tourism Policy, ahead of the planned signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with investors who indicated interest during the recent Bauchi Economic Summit.
The Commissioner for Tourism and Culture, Alhaji Abdul Hassan, disclosed this in an interview with the Journalists for Tourism Network in his office. He said the ministry has already begun wide-ranging consultations with experts and key players within and outside the state.
According to him, those engaged in the ongoing review include registered hoteliers, tour operators, travel agencies, tourism scholars, tourism journalists, relevant institutions, and even security and religious bodies.
“The new policy we are working on is designed to fully protect the interests of the state and investors, ensuring a mutually beneficial environment,” he explained. “We envision a framework that is durable, future-oriented, and compliant with international standards.”
Giving further insight into what to expect, the commissioner said the policy will guarantee a better experience for visitors, investors, and host communities. “Tourists will continue to find Bauchi attractive because our services are being upgraded, our facilities improved, and our personal engagement strengthened,” he said.
Hassan also highlighted ongoing developments at major tourist sites. He noted that the Yankari Game Reserve now enjoys 24-hour power supply from its solar farm, with clean water, enhanced security, functional game-viewing trucks, and a well-motivated workforce.
“The Wikki Warm Spring remains our prized attraction, and our accommodation facilities have been upgraded to international standards,” he added.
At Sumu Wildlife Park, he said the 13.5-kilometre access road may be completed before the rainy season, while catering and recreational facilities are being prepared for visitors.
However, the commissioner stressed that tourism remains a multifaceted sector. With Bauchi’s rising profile as an emerging industrial hub for business communities across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas, he said the involvement of additional stakeholders has become crucial.
“This is why a comprehensive and all-embracing tourism policy has become absolutely imperative,” he stated.
