Bauchi State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with USAID funded Health Workers Management (USAID HWM) Activity have commemorated this year’s Health Workers Week with a call on health workers to rededicate themselves to providing quality healthcare services to the general public.
In well attended stakeholders engagement meeting to mark the week, held at the conference hall of Chartwell Hotel Bauchi on Tuesday 14 May,2024, Bauchi State Commissioner of Health Dr. Adamu Umar Sambo, in his key note address described health workers as heroes, whose work touches the lives of the people in a positive manner.
The Commissioner said that the State Government under the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed places high premium on quality healthcare services and that health workers in the State takes special place in the heart of the Governor.
Dr. Sambo also commended the healthcare service providers for their perseverance in providing quality services despite the challenges and shortages in State’s health human resource.
In his address, the State Coordinator of USAID Health Workers Management (USAID HWM) Activity Mr. Robert Bature said that the World Health Workers Week is intended to create awareness and generate support for more investment in Pre-Service hence production is a key Component of the Human Resource Development.
Mr. Bature used the occasion to commend the contributions and dedication of the State Pre-service Health Training Institution in the production of our quality students graduate who will eventually become the state quality front-line health workers.
He said USAID -HWM has been working closely with 8 Pre-service Health Training Institution (PSHTIs) (Public and Private ) producing front line health workers, and also work with the 2 regulatory bodies Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria ( NMCN ) and Community Health Practice Registration Board of Nigeria(CHPRBN).
While highlighting some of USAID HWM collaboration with some of the pre-service institutions, Mr. Bature disclosed that HWM Activity provided scholarship to 88 Tutors from Bauchi to enroll in the Kayzeen online Training. The scholarship will grant the tutors access to an invaluable learning opportunity for continuous professional development on a course titled “Comprehensive Strategies for Teaching Excellence in the Modern Classroom.”
He also informed that USAID-HWM Provided scholarship funds in 2023 to 120 female indigent students enrolled in the CHEW, Community Nursing, and Community Midwifery training programs in both Public and Private health training Institutions stressing that the scholarship will continue in 2024.
“USAID HWM Activity supported the state to establish a State Health workforce registry and further upgraded the registry to 5.0 local instance also known as the ‘’ Integrated Human Resource Information System (iHRIS)
“The iHRIS was launch by state in the last quarter and subsequently trained the State and LGA -HRH Managers on how to navigate the iHRIS platform to ensure ownership”, said Bature.
In his goodwill message, Honorable Lawal Dauda , the Bauchi State House of Assembly Health Committee Chairman thanked all those working in the healthcare profession for their selfless commitment and diligence towards improving the health and well-being of the people of Bauchi State.
Honorable Dauda said that the health workers week provides a special time to recognize the tireless efforts of healthcare professionals who save lives daily and keep communities safe.
“As we celebrate this year’s World Health Workers Week, there is indeed a lot to be happy about especially in the ability of our health workers to ensure the delivery of quality health care services. No doubt, the crucial role health workers play on the frontline and your contributions to maintaining healthy communities is really commendable.
“As you all know, Bauchi State has been grappling with pressing issues of shortage of Human Resource for Health and high concentration of the available ones in urban areas while rural areas are understaffed. Accordingly, we must acknowledge and commend the present administration of Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammad for its concerted efforts to address manpower problem by recruiting Medical Doctors, Nurses and Midwives with a view to improving healthcare service delivery in the State.
“Let me assure you that, the Bauchi State House of Assembly will continue to enact laws that will strengthen Pre-Service Training Institutions to address issues inhabiting Human Resources for Health”, Honorable Dauda said.
The occasion attracted key stakeholders from health related MDAs, Pre-Service Health institutions, Implementing Partners, Students, CSOs and the media.
High point of the event was an award of excellence presented to a private institution, Aminu Sale College of Health Technology.
