One of the leading private kindergarten schools in Bauchi metropolis, Meanas Academy have held their annual career day for it’s pupils at the weekend, with a call on parents to allow their children and wards to choose an endeavor that is close to their hearts.

A parent, Mrs Elizabeth Carh, said imposing the career choice of parents on their children often creates a pressure on them.

“They might struggle under this pressure of a chosen career to evolve. As self-satisfaction is the highest motive of existence, children should be allowed to choose their future career .

“So parents should let their children be free to decide their own career line and should support them in in that direction,” said Carh.

Also speaking, a Guidance Counselor Dr. Habila Alexandra explained that most times children choose career according to the wishes of their parents.

“They will have a boring academic life as they will face a lack of interest.

“College life is the best phase of a student’s life. To enjoy this phase and make it more interesting, a child should choose his/her own career path.,” said the expert.

But in a contrary view, Hajiya Fatima Ahmed (a parent) said that she is not against children choosing their own career, but that parents should also have a say in their children’s choice of career.

“Parents provide immense support to their kids by guiding and steering them on a right career path.

“No parent would intentionally like to spoil his or her child’s future by making a wrong decision.

“Therefore we should always remember that parents are much more experienced than their children, so there is nothing wrong in giving them support and advice,” she said.

Earlier in his welcome address, Malam Adamu Aminu, Head teacher Meanas Academy Bauchi, said every child has the right to choose their own career and they have the right to live their dreams.

“A child can only know his interests and abilities better than anyone else. He knows his subjects and areas of interest and thus, can decide his career path easily,

“That is why we organise career day annually for children by inviting professionals from different fields to give our pupils talk on different human endeavours that could shape their choice of career”, said the head teacher.

Highlights of the occasion was showcasing the pupils dressed in uniforms depicting different professional calling.
