300 female adolescent junior secondary schools students in Bauchi are undergoing training on Menstrual hygiene management with emphasis on the use of reusable sanitary pads.

Participants at the training                                The 2 day training is been organised by Bauchi state Universal Education Board in collaboration with UNICEF Bauchi Field Office.                                                        Lead Facilitator Halima Ibrahim said adolescent girls are short of information on Menstrual hygiene as parents shy away from talking about the topic with their daughters.

“In this part of the Country mothers are uncomfortable discussing menstrual hygiene with their daughters and this has led to misconceptions among the girls”.

Ibrahim said the training is to dispel myths surrounding menstruation and to educate the girls on how to make reusable sanitary pads from local materials around them.

“Girls in the rural areas do skip school during their menstrual period because they cannot afford sanitary pads, so they will stay at home for the period. We want the girls to make pads from their used clothes and other materials”, said the facilitator.

Our correspondent reports that the girls were drawn from the six local government areas where UNICEF is implementing the Girls Education Program (GEP).
