Rep. Ali Garu Boosts Campus Security with Solar Streetlights at SAZU

Daily Chronicle

The Member representing Bauchi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Aliyu Aminu Garu, has donated solar-powered streetlights to the female hostel at the Yuli Campus of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZU), Bauchi, in a move aimed at enhancing safety and improving night-time visibility on the campus.

The intervention is expected to strengthen security around the hostel and complement ongoing efforts by the Bauchi State Government to improve infrastructure and educational standards at the university.

Receiving the donation, the Vice-Chancellor of SAZU, Professor Fatimah Tahir, described the gesture as a timely and significant contribution that aligns with government investments in the education sector. She noted that the solar streetlights would create a safer and more conducive learning environment for students, particularly female undergraduates.

“This is a tremendous achievement,” Professor Tahir said, adding that the project would add value to both the students and the university community. She explained that the solar-powered lights would also serve as an alternative energy source, complementing the institution’s existing 500KVA generator provided by the university management.

Represented at the event by the Director of Entrepreneurship Development, Dr. Salisu Ibrahim Waziri, the Vice-Chancellor commended Honourable Garu, describing him as an “icon of development,” and emphasized that investment in education translates directly to broader societal development.

Professor Tahir disclosed that the newly constructed female hostel at the Yuli Campus—built through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)—was deliberately selected for the siting of the solar streetlights due to its strategic importance and the need to ensure the safety of female students.

She expressed appreciation for the lawmaker’s support and called on other public office holders, philanthropists, and well-meaning individuals to emulate the gesture. The Vice-Chancellor also thanked the Visitor to the University and Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, CON, for his sustained investments, which she said have significantly improved the university’s overall condition.
