The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Bauchi Central, WHO, BASPHCD and some community resource groups has organized a colourful awareness walk to commemorate the 2025 World Polio Day. The event was aimed at encouraging parents and caregivers to continue vaccinating their children and to sustain Nigeria’s polio-free status.
The 2025 World Polio Day awareness walk began at the Emir’s Palace in Bauchi, attracting a large crowd of enthusiastic participants dressed in branded T-shirts with bold messages promoting immunization.
Participants included Polio Survivors Groups, Fathers for Good Health, Mama2Mama, U-Reporters, and other community volunteers.
The walk passed through major streets of Bakaro, Karofi, and Kofar Dumi, and ended at the Bayan Fada Primary Healthcare Centre — all in a carnival-like atmosphere filled with music, drums, and fanfare.
In a goodwill message, UNICEF’s Social and Behavioural Change Manager for Polio Outbreak Countries, Mr. Pachanan Achari, applauded the government, health workers, and partners for their commitment to keeping Nigeria polio-free.
“Let us amplify the message that vaccines are safe, effective, and essential for every child. Every dose not only prevents polio but strengthens our health systems.”
He called on governments and development partners to sustain efforts in reaching every child, especially those in hard-to-reach communities, with life-saving vaccines.
Representatives from the Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency, the World Health Organization, and Rotary International also delivered goodwill messages.
This year’s World Polio Day is themed “End Polio: Every Child, Every Vaccine, Everywhere.”
UNICEF and its partners say the goal of a world free from polio is within reach — but only if every child continues to receive the life-saving vaccine.
