The Nigeria Hotel Association (NHA) has issued a warning to its members nationwide to beware of individuals collecting money under the guise of registration for personnel training by the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR). This warning follows a directive from the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Economy.
NHA’s National President, His Highness Eze Dr. Patrick C. Anyanwu, made this known during a press briefing in Bauchi.
The NHA had raised concerns about NIHOTOUR’s plans to register and train hotel personnel, pointing out that registration falls under the purview of the Nigeria Tourism and Development Authority (NTDA). After consultations with stakeholders, the Minister directed NIHOTOUR to suspend the exercise until further notice. This suspension is still in effect, and members are advised to ignore any contrary instructions.
The NHA President expressed gratitude to the Minister for engaging with them and to the President of the Federation of Tourism Association of Nigeria (FTAN), Alhaji Dr. Badaki Aliyu, for his support.
He emphasized the importance of transparency and consultation in any initiatives affecting the hotel industry. The NHA supports training and certifications that raise industry standards but insists that such initiatives must be done openly and with proper consultation.
The NHA also highlighted the challenges faced by its members, including multiple taxations, which they claim are suffocating the industry. The association called for policies that encourage growth, sustainability, and expansion, rather than creating more burdens. They appreciate the commitment of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tourism to push laws that protect hoteliers’ rights and create a better environment for the industry.
The NHA assured its members that it will continue to work closely with the government and stakeholders to reposition the industry for greater growth.
They urged all agencies and associations to consult with NHA leadership at all levels before taking actions that affect their members. The suspension of NIHOTOUR’s fee collection remains in force until an official resolution is made, and members are advised to ignore any contrary instructions.
